Why travel to Tibet?
What’s the weather like in Tibet?
Tibet has a typical plateau climate with thin air, strong sunlight, and rapidly changing weather. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, so bringing multiple layers is essential. In summer, average temperatures can reach around 20°C, while in winter they can drop to about -5°C, with day–night differences of up to 10°C.
Top five dishes to try
1. Tsampa – A staple food made from highland barley, often mixed with tea or butter.
2. Sweet Tea – A local milk tea with an extra-rich, creamy flavor.
3. Stone Pot Chicken – Combining Tibetan free-range chicken with wild matsutake mushrooms.
4. Momo Dumplings – Steamed dumplings filled with juicy minced beef and onions.
5. Yak Meat – Flavorful and chewy, with a stronger taste than regular beef.
Top Places to visit in Tibet
Lhasa
Lhasa is the cultural heart of Tibet, where modern life and ancient traditions coexist in harmony. Slow down and take your time to visit the magnificent Potala Palace, wander through Barkhor Street, and watch locals perform the traditional circle dance in the park.
Shigatse
Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, is more traditional compared to Lhasa. Here, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, sacred lakes, and grasslands come together, blending profound religious culture with breathtaking natural scenery. It is also home to the Everest Base Camp.
Lhoka
Shannan is the cradle of Tibetan culture, yet remains little known to most travelers. It is home to Tibet’s first palace, Yumbu Lhakhang, one of the “Three Sacred Lakes” — Yamdrok Lake, and the very first monastery in Tibet, Samye Monastery. Here, you can find the essence of Tibet in one place.
Ngari
This is a true hidden land. Pilgrims from all over the world come to worship Mount Kailash, the sacred mountain, and here you will also find one holy lake after another. This land is also home to Tibet’s oldest kingdom — the ancient Guge Dynasty.
